How do you manage pests and diseases in a walnut orchard?
Check the trees, the crop and the weather before you spray — not a calendar.
Diseases and pests cost you in three ways: lost trees, lower crop and poor kernel quality. Manage each block as its own system — check the trees, the crop, the weather, your traps and your beneficial insects, then act on the problem you actually have, at the time it is vulnerable.
This chapter helps you decide what to check first and what to do next. It does not give pesticide products, rates or spray programmes — those have to come from current local advice, because registrations and recommended products change every year and differ by country.
Start with the problems that cost most
Use these codes when you plan your scouting. T means tree survival or long-term orchard value. Y means yield. K means kernel quality, shell appearance or marketability.

How do you protect the crop from major diseases?
Walnut blight
Walnut blight damages catkins, young nuts, shoots and leaves. Black lesions are the usual sign. Rain helps the disease spread, and young nuts are the main commercial risk because damage removes crop and reduces quality.
Anthracnose
Anthracnose starts as small leaf spots that become larger blotches, and can also affect petioles, shoots and fruit. Repeated early leaf loss weakens young trees and reduces the canopy that fills the nuts.
Check after wet spring periods, and compare affected leaves with healthy leaves from the same area. Mite damage looks sanded or worn rather than blotched; salt, water and nutrition problems often follow soil or irrigation patterns instead of weather. Remove sources of infected leaf material where your orchard system allows it.
Root and crown disease: dig before you decide
Phytophthora root and crown rot. Prolonged wet soil favours this disease, and it can cause slow decline or rapid collapse. Dig at the crown and roots of a weak tree and compare it with a healthy tree nearby. Correct ponding, slow infiltration and poor water distribution before you replace a tree.
Armillaria root rot. This root disease can create expanding centres of weak, dead or missing trees. Check below the bark of affected roots — white or yellow fan-shaped fungal growth between bark and wood is a strong sign, and dark root-like strands can also be present. Avoid moving infected roots or soil through the orchard.
Crown gall. Look for rough galls on roots, crown or trunk. Young trees are most exposed because wounds allow infection, so keep roots from drying at planting and avoid bark damage from equipment and weed control. Map every affected tree.

Canker and dieback
Canker and dieback can kill spurs, branches and young trees. In Europe and Mediterranean regions, Botryosphaeria and Diaporthe (also called Phomopsis) are important causes of this problem.
Look for leaves that wilt beyond a canker, brown or black tissue under bark, black fruiting bodies in older lesions, blackened young stems, dead branches and late hull decay. Check dead wood, spurs and affected fruit, and map the problem by block and row.
- Thousand cankers disease is different: a fungus carried into the bark by the walnut twig beetle. Look for many small cankers, small beetle entry holes and galleries under the outer bark. Photograph and map suspect trees — do not assume that every canker is thousand cankers disease.
- Vertical oozing canker is a separate problem again. A vertical, wet or exuding trunk canker is not the same as leaf or nut blight. Send trunk material for diagnosis.
Blackline
Blackline is a virus-related problem that shows up at the graft union itself, in grafted English walnut trees. It is not a universal cause of walnut decline, and it does not affect every planting.
Poor growth, yellow leaves, early leaf drop, dieback and shoots from below the graft union can all be signs. Check under the bark at the graft union: a narrow black line of dead tissue at the union is the key sign. Root disease, drought, nutrient problems and graft incompatibility can all look similar.
Which insects and mites reduce yield or quality?
Nut pests: check the nuts, not only the traps
- Codling moth. Larvae bore into nutlets and nuts; early attack can cause nut drop, later attack damages kernels. Look for larvae and frass. Use local pheromone or kairomone traps, set a local biofix and follow the local timing model — do not use a date copied from another region.
- Walnut husk fly. This pest causes stings, soft black husks and shell staining, and early damage can darken or shrivel kernels. Place yellow sticky traps in block hot spots and read catches together with husk damage and egg status. One trap for the whole farm is not enough.
- Navel orangeworm. This pest feeds in the kernel; webbing, frass and several larvae in one nut are useful signs. It uses damaged nuts before husk split, and sound walnuts become more exposed once the husk splits. Remove mummies and damaged nuts, check split and ground nuts, and harvest promptly when the crop is ready.

Aphids, mites and scales: protect the beneficial insects
Aphids leave honeydew, and heavy populations can cause leaf drop and lower yield or quality. Start checking shoots and both sides of leaves early in the season, and record aphids, parasitoids and predators together. Do not add excess nitrogen where aphids are already a problem.
Spider mites leave a sanded, worn or bronzed look on leaves — water, heat and salt stress can look similar. Check for mites and predatory mites on both leaf surfaces, and do not break a working predator system to control a low population.
Use dormancy to check scale insects, mite eggs and evidence of parasites on scaffolds, limbs, branches and prunings. Map hot spots for spring checks.
Wood borers: protect young trunks and stressed trees
Flatheaded borers attack injured, diseased and sunburned wood. Their larvae feed below the bark and inside the wood, and they can girdle and kill young trees. Keep the trees growing well, check suspect bark for galleries and frass, and remove badly infested wood before the growing season where this is practical.
How do you tell similar problems apart?

Send samples when several young trees decline, a root or crown diagnosis will change your replanting plan, an unusual canker appears, or a major treatment decision depends on the result. Send fresh material with photos, tree age, variety, symptom history, watering history and the field location.
Why young orchards need a separate plan
Young trees have small root systems, exposed trunks and many planting wounds. They have little reserve, so a problem that only slows an older tree can kill a young one.

Run IPM by block, not by farm average
A wet low area, an orchard edge, a weak irrigation zone or a young-tree section can behave differently from the rest of the orchard. Keep a separate record for each block and for any clear hot spot.

Use the crop stage and local weather, not a borrowed calendar. Blight risk rises with wet weather and exposed green tissue. Codling moth timing follows local adult flight and egg hatch. Husk fly needs block trapping. Navel orangeworm risk rises when husks split.

Northern-hemisphere growers can use this order through their own season. Southern-hemisphere growers should shift the calendar by six months.
Make every control decision pass six checks
If you use a locally registered treatment, do not decide from a symptom alone. Check all six points first.

Local pest thresholds, degree-day targets, and the treatments, rates and intervals that satisfy these six checks are not given here — they have to come from current local guidance, which changes yearly in a way this chapter cannot.
Use the same method, but adapt it to your region
The IPM method applies everywhere. The exact pest list, flight pattern, weather model, action point and local control options do not.
- Spain and Mediterranean areas: use weather and crop stage for blight decisions, and include Botryosphaeria and Diaporthe dieback in your canker checks.
- France and nearby regions: treat an oozing trunk canker as a separate diagnostic problem, not ordinary blight.
- European and Mediterranean wood-borer areas: add the leopard moth (Zeuzera pyrina) to your field guide where it is known to occur.
- Grafted orchards: keep blackline in your graft-union diagnosis list.
Ask your local adviser, laboratory or extension service which pests are present, how to monitor them, and which local control options are current.

- Finish dormant checks. Look for scales, mite eggs, parasites, dead wood and damaged trunks.
- Prepare monitoring. Set trap locations, servicing dates, a weather source and your local biofix procedure.
- Complete sanitation. Deal with mummies, damaged nuts, prunings, dead wood and handling-area residues.
- Train the scouting team. Make sure they know the key symptoms and the diagnostic contact.
- Check equipment. Schedule sprayer calibration and coverage checks for the current canopy.
