ABOUT CHANDLER VARIETY

Chandler is our top selling walnut tree variety. It was developed by University of California. In the recent years, Chandler is the most preferred walnut variety for new orchards because of its productivity and excellent nut quality.

  • Yield: Chandler is a highly productive variety. It is a lateral bearer with 90 percent of its lateral branches being productive. Therefore it offers very high yields. Chandler walnut tree starts yielding walnuts in the first year that you plant your trees. Check the productivity table under this page to see productivity over years.
  • Nut and shell quality: Chandler produces large nuts with thin shell and very light-colored kernels. Thin shell and kernel color are important features in determining walnut selling price. Walnuts that have lighter kernel color sell for higher prices. Its kernels are easy to remove from the shell and easy to crack out into halves.
  • Tree size: Chandler grows in a moderately vigorous way and it is semi upright. Chandler walnut tree's height can reach up to 15 meters. But since they are pruned, they are usually kept at a smaller height. Same goes for the horizontal size. Usually the tree's branches are pruned to keep it at approximately 5 meters width.
Chandler is suitable for high density planting such as 7 x 5 meters spacing. More details about tree spacing are provided down this page.
  • Leafing time (Blooming date): Chandler is a late leafing and blooming variety. This is an advantage, because late leafing varieties are less likely to be affected by frost, walnut blight and codling moth.
  • Pollination: Chandler is a self pollinating tree, it can yield walnuts without a pollenizer. But it can give you higher yields when used with a pollenizer. For this reason we highly recommend planting pollenizer trees.
Chandler's pollenizer is Franquette. In an orchard, 95% of the trees should be Chandler and 5% of the trees should be Franquette.
  • Rootstock: At Waltree we bud Chandler onto Juglans regia rootstock (known as English walnut). It is a commonly preferred rootstock because of its tolerance to blackline disease.
  • Lifespan: Chandler walnut trees are the same with regular English walnut trees in terms of how long they live. Walnut trees can live 100 years or longer.
  • When to plant: Chandler can be planted from November until April of next year, depending on your country. Please ask us if you are not sure.

Chandler Walnut Tree Yield

Chandler starts producing walnuts very early. Your trees will be 2 years old when you receive them. Begin giving fruits even in their first year after planting. However, in order to conserve the energy of the tree and improve the productivity for the following years, we recommend you to cut down the fruits for the first 3 years. You should cut the walnuts off from the trees when they emerge, and not let them develop. This allows the tree to use its energy for growing a stronger trunk and bigger roots, instead of producing walnuts. This increases the productivity of the tree in the long term. After 3 years you can start collecting the fruits and start selling the walnuts of your orchard. You can check the Chandler walnut tree yield table to see how many kilograms of walnuts you can collect per tree. The numbers expressed as yield in the table are dry walnuts (walnuts with brown shells) in kilograms.

Yield increases gradually every year after planting the trees. After 10 years, yield no longer increases and remains at the same level. You can collect between 30 to 40 kilograms of shelled walnuts every year from each mature and well-maintained Chandler walnut tree in your orchard. This means that you can collect more than 10 tons of shelled walnuts per hectare.

CHANDLER WALNUT TREE SPACING

CHANDLER WALNUT TREE SPACING

With years of experience, at Waltree nursery we recommend 7 x 5 meters spacing for Chandler walnut trees. Using this spacing, you can plant 280 trees per hectare. This planting scheme is called 'hedgerow'. It places the trees in the same row closer to each other and leaves enough space between rows. This design provides early returns and allows you to get high yield from your orchard in shorter time. Another important point is that you need to plant Chandler walnut trees together with its pollinator variety: Franquette. When planning your orchard, we recommend you to plant 95% of your trees as Chandler and 5% of the trees as Franquette.

You can plant the pollinator trees in the same row to identify them more easily when the plants grow. Pollinators should be planted upwind from the main variety to help pollens spread with the wind and pollenize the main variety. Chandler Walnut and Kernel Characteristics

chandler walnut size

Chandler produces large nuts with an average weight of 13 grams. Its shell size is approximately 4 cm and it has a smooth shape. Chandler's shell is sturdy, it is not easy for birds and insects to break or cause damage to its shell. But at the same time, Chandler walnut’s shell is easily breakable by hand, which is very good for the selling price of the walnuts.

Inside the shell, Chandler walnut has an excellent quality kernel. Colour is an important factor in determining the selling price of the walnuts. Chandler’s kernel colour is excellent and its internal whiteness rate is 90% or better. Kernel weight of Chandler is approximately 6.5 grams. This means that the kernel constitutes 50% of the shelled walnut. Oil percentage of the kernel is 70% and this ratio results in a great taste.

Is there such thing as "dwarf walnut trees"?

Short answer is "no". Some people who have just begun to learn about walnut trees think that they can plant dwarf walnut trees just like dwarf fruit trees. However, this is a misconception and there is no such thing as a "dwarf walnut tree". Walnut trees are always full size due to their nature.

What else do I have to buy when establishing a walnut tree orchard?

In addition to the trees, you need to buy a good drip irrigation system. Also it's a good idea to surround your orchard with a metal fence to keep away wild animals from the trees.

What should be the planting distance between the trees?

Our suggestion for large orchards is to plant the trees with 7 x 5 meters planting scheme. This can allow big machinery (such as harvesting machine, etc.) to move between the trees. However, for smaller orchards we suggest 6 x 5 meters planting scheme. If you won't be using big machinery and you will only be using a tractor, you can plant them with 6 x 5 meters planting scheme.

When will my trees start producing walnuts?

Your trees will start producing walnuts in the same year that you plant them. However, to increase long term productivity, we advise you to start collecting walnuts only 3 years after you plant them. In the first 3 years trees already start producing walnuts. However, it is better for the trees to use their energy to grow better roots and stronger trunk instead of producing walnuts. This approach results in higher yields in long term.

How should we prepare our land for planting the trees and what is the procedure for planting?

When you buy your trees we give you free consultation and advice on everything you need to know from start to finish. We also check your soil analysis reports and give you suggestions based on your report.
